Who Should Apply?

The University’s Chinese Language Flagship Program is designed to bring undergraduate students (including those without a background in Chinese) to the Superior proficiency level within a five-year time span. While far from impossible, this presents a demanding and intense challenge that all students must work diligently to meet. Our rigorous curriculum is only effective for students who are committed to exert the effort necessary to succeed in class. Thus, the ideal Flagship applicant:

  • has a strong academic record
  • understands how Chinese will enhance his/her personal and professional goals
  • is committed to completing the entire Chinese Language Flagship Program and achieving Superior-level Chinese proficiency
  • has applied for undergraduate admission to The University of Mississippi (in process or already accepted)

Please note, prior Chinese language experience is not required, but those who have it are also encouraged to apply.

To apply to our program, you must first apply to The University of Mississippi. The admittance process usually takes about two weeks, once all documents are submitted. Once admitted, click here to access the applications for all special programs, including the Croft Institute for International Studiesthe Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, the Center for Manufacturing Excellence (a combination Engineering-Business program), the Chinese Flagship Program, and several others. If you encounter technical difficulties, see the general admissions application page for browser compatibility restrictions.

How to Apply

The Chinese Language Flagship Program will begin accepting applications in early September from high school seniors for admission to the 2022 cohort. The priority deadline for applications  is January 5, 2022. We typically begin announcing decisions within 2 weeks of that date.  Note: some of the other special programs that Flagship students often also apply to, such as the Honors College or the Croft Institute for International Studies, have early action deadlines.

Applications are submitted online at Undergraduate Admissions. Once you have applied to the university and paid the application fee, apply to Chinese Flagship and any other special programs on the Supplemental Applications page. Several essays are necessary, as well as recommendation letters from teachers and counselors. Begin your application to the university immediately so that you can start working on the Chinese Flagship application and collect these letters while they process your transcript and test scores. We recommend that you inform us directly at chinese@olemiss.edu that you are in the process of applying. Students currently enrolled at the University or considering transferring from another university must contact the program directly at chinese@olemiss.edu to apply.
