Confirm JumpStart Participation ☷
All Flagship students who are taking CHIN 111 and/or 112 this summer with us and could use additional cost reductions, OR students who can skip the summer but would like to get a head start on their UM coursework at a reduced price, consider the following:
The University of Mississippi Division of Outreach is offering scholarships for its JumpStart program that could reduce your costs this summer by more than $1,000.
The main goal of this program is to encourage incoming freshmen to consider taking courses over the summer and to be mentored while they do. Students must pay a substantial program fee, but in turn, they are rewarded with a net scholarship worth over $500 per term. Flagship students are not allowed to take other courses alongside CHIN 111 or 112, so you will be taking 5 credits per term (that’s 10 if you’re starting in CHIN 111).
To be clear, the half tuition scholarship is what you net after taking into account the JumpStart program fees, which seem to exist to insure your commitment to participation.
Other requirements include participation in the mentoring program as well as the purchase of one of the cheapest summer meal plans. The mentoring program may mean meeting twice per week for short “crash courses” in time management and “adult life skills.” There are also weekly peer group meetings, which are usually a little more social in nature.

As a Chinese Flagship student, you are in no way obligated to participate; however, if the meal plan and other requirements are already in line with your summer plans, this could be a good opportunity to lower your summer costs substantially.
Note: JumpStart prefers that CHIN 111 students arrive on campus and meet with them just before their summer session begins (usually on the summer session housing move-in date), but it may not absolutely essential, since Chinese Flagship is registering you for class.
Also, you may note on the JumpStart website that you need to be aware of potential conflicts with other summer programs, like “intensive language.” JumpStart has confirmed that if/when conflicts arise (of a programmatic nature), you are to defer to the language program. This means, for example, that you won’t be able to take 6 credits per session and will therefore miss out on a small amount of potential scholarship funds (we do not allow students to take any other summer coursework or hold part-time jobs. History shows that it is way too risky, even for someone who has prior experience with Mandarin). Past participants can confirm that JumpStart posed no serious disruption to their studies and was well worth the funding they received.
