Financial Aid

Program Specific Aid

Generous financial assistance is made available to Chinese Flagship students to assist them in meeting the costs of the program encountered in the summer prior to freshman year, in one summer of intensive language study in Taiwan, and throughout the Capstone Year program in Taiwan. The exact amounts are always subject to changes in funding received from The Language Flagship and provided by the National Security Education Program. Students’ scholarships may also be graded according to performance.

General University Scholarships

The Flagship Program does not provide financial aid to support students during the fall and spring semesters. However, many Flagship students receive considerable scholarship support from the University on the basis of their academic qualifications. For more information regarding financial aid at the university, visit the Financial Aid Office online. In addition, many Chinese Language Flagship students enroll in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and/or as International Studies majors in the Croft Institute for International Studies. Still others combine Flagship with programs like the Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME).   All of these programs award several highly competitive four-year scholarships.  Those considering ROTC should note that the federal government awards Flagship ROTC scholarships to students accepted and enrolled simultaneously in a Language Flagship program and in Army or Air Force ROTC.  ROTC students in any branch (including Navy and the Marine option) typically receive larger scholarships from Flagship for a summer abroad and for the Capstone year.  Most are also eligible for study abroad funding during other summers through ROTC Project GO.

Study Abroad Stipends

Flagship students have also won external scholarship support in the form of Boren Scholarships, Institute for International Public Policy Fellowships, and Critical Language Scholarships from the U.S. Department of State. The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College also offers stipends for qualified students to support study abroad.
