UM Project GO – Summer in Taiwan

Program Overview

    • Beginner I       – 1st Year (CHIN 111 & 112)
    • Beginner II       – 2nd Year (CHIN 211 & 212)

Activities and Excursions

Saturdays: “field trips” take students to key areas of cultural interest in and around Taipei.

Sundays: students are free to explore Taipei

Scholarship Info

All Project GO programs provide funding for:

  • Tuition/fees for all credits earned
  • Room and Board
  • Travel to/from study location
  • Books
  • Insurance
  • Chinese visa

The following costs will not be included in Project GO Funding: personal spending money, personal travel, costs for obtaining a passport, medication, and expenses for dependents.

Year 1

Course Details

Credits Offered: 10
Course Numbers: CHIN 111 (5 credits) & CHIN 112 (5 credits)
Course Structure:

  • Class 1 (2 hrs, 8 – 12 students) sentence patterns, new vocabulary, and some grammar;
  • Class 2 (2 hrs, 4 – 8 students) teacher-led drill of material covered Class 1;
  • Class 3 (1/2 -hour, 1 student) one-on-one afternoon conversation session using the sentence patterns and vocabulary from classes 1 & 2
  • Introduction to Chinese language and culture, with an emphasis on practical conversational language and on essential reading and writing skills.
  • By the end of this program, students are expected to be able to participate in basic conversations on “survival” topics, to read pedagogical materials on such topics, and to grasp the meaning of authentic materials that employ characters from the course vocabulary. Students will be able to recognize about 500 characters, to write about 250 characters, and to use Chinese phrases that demonstrate knowledge of common Chinese cultural and social customs.

No prior language experience, but strong interest.

Year 1 goals

By the end of this program, students are expected to be able to participate in basic conversations on “survival” topics, to read pedagogical materials on such topics, and to grasp the meaning of authentic materials that employ characters from the course vocabulary. Students will be able to recognize about 500 characters, to write about 250 characters, and to use Chinese phrases that demonstrate knowledge of common Chinese cultural and social customs.

Course Numbers: CHIN 211 (5 credits) & CHIN 212 (5 credits)
Course Structure:

  • Class 1 (2 hrs, 8 – 12 students) sentence patterns, new vocabulary, and some grammar;
  • Class 2 (2 hrs, 4 – 8 students) teacher-led drill of material covered Class 1;
  • Class 3 (1/2 -hour, 1 student) one-on-one afternoon conversation session using the sentence patterns and vocabulary from classes 1 & 2
  • Lectures on Chinese culture, society, economy, etc.
  • By the end of this program, those finishing the courses are expected to be able to do fairly sustained conversation, read rather complex texts, write a fine composition in Chinese characters, recognize about 1,200 characters, write about 1,000 characters, and know some common Chinese culture and social customs.
