Ms. Cheng is pursuing a Master’s of English Translation at Shanghai University, and received her B.A. in English from Datong University. Before she joined the flagship program, Ms. Jingjing Cheng was a volunteer Chinese teacher at the Confucius Institute at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand (2010-2012), where she taught Chinese to undergraduates.

Ms. Wan is a graduate student from Shanghai University, majoring in MTI (Master of Translation and Interpretation). She received her B.A. in Teaching English from Jiangxi Science & Technology University.

She has worked at the Shanghai Translation Publishing House as an intern and also worked at the College of International Exchange at Shanghai University as an administrative assistant.

Mr. He did his undergraduate course study at Shanghai Normal University, College of Life and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology Professional Graduate Institute of Environmental and Chemical Engineering at Shanghai University.

His primary research is on the sustainability of fish and the detection of organic pollution in Shanghai’s Huangpu River.

Mr. Zhao is a graduate student in the Civil Engineering department at the University of Mississippi. He received his B.S. in Environmental Engineering at Nanjing Normal University in China. His research interests include stromwater management and material impact on environment and water resources.

Mr. Zhang is a Ph.D student in Finance at The University of Mississippi. He received his M.S. in Financial Mathematics at University of Dayton, and his B.S. in Computer Science at Capital Normal University in China.

His research interests include investment strategy, corporate finance, portfolio management and fiscal and monetary policies in China.

Dr. Hsieh holds a B.A. in English from National Taiwan Normal University (2007), an MSc in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford (2009), an M.Phil in English & Applied Linguistics (with Distinction) from the University of Cambridge (2011), and a Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge in 2015.

Dr. Hsieh’s research interests include theoretical syntax, in particular the acquisition of relative clauses by second-language learners of Chinese and English.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Henan University in China with a double major in History and Law and is now working on a Master’s degree in Chinese History at Shanghai University. His research interests center on the history of China and Historical Theory.

Dr. Michael Metcalf, Director Emeritus of the Chinese Language Flagship Program

Dr. Metcalf, former Professor of History and Associate Provost for International Affairs, served as co-director of the Chinese Language Flagship Program since its founding in 2003. He was instrumental in the establishment and development of the program during its first decade of existence.
